Who lives on a griddle under the sea? Spongebob Pancake!

Spongebob pancake art

Allie doesn’t know who Spongebob is, this came through as a request from a reader on facebook. She’ll probably love the show in a few years, but for now we’re sticking to Nick Jr. and PBS. Anyway, he wasn’t too hard to make even though I managed to overcook his teeth and make him look like he drinks way too much coffee.

The brown color is cocoa, the red is colored with strawberry jelly and the yellow is a tiny amount of stale turmeric. Don’t use fresh turmeric because you can taste it. If it’s older it loses its flavor but maintains the coloring potential. A reader suggested it to me as an alternative to regular food dye if you are concerned about food coloring.

Fantastic!! I often try to make your pancakes for my kiddos, but they usually come out overdone and you can’t see the color that well… LOL

Annatto (or saffron, but that’s more expensive) will also give you a natural yellow color without the strong taste of turmeric.

great site – really love your pancakes – I have some beetroot powder which I can use for red dye instead of the usual red food dye. I need to try some pancake creativity now that I have seen the amazing stuff you can do

    Thanks so much!

    Jim,

These are truly amazing! These pancakes would intertain everyone and yes I agree with above poster, you should really open you up a pancake shop and make things I guess that wouldn’t take too long, since you’ll have a heck of alot of customers.

You’re a wonderful father to take all the time you do just to make breakfast fun, exciting and good for Allie. Thanks for being one of those great dads out there.

I’m going to have to try to master something in the kitchen with pancakes.

  28. Atena 15. Oct, 2010 at 1:47 pm #

I don’t if anyone has suggested this but you could also use saffron to get an orange or yellow color without using dye and unlike turmeric it has a flavor that could work with your pancakes.

I guess her ever ordering pancakes out in a restaurant is going to be a big disappointment! (grin) Great job Dad.

As hyper is Sponge Bob is I am sure that he does drink loads of coffee, so your depiction of his dark teeth is probably more accurate. He probably has them professionally whitened……..lol. Great job with the pancakes. They are amazing and your kids will treasure the time you take to make them pancakes like no other.
